Path of Exile Item Upgrading
The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.
Usually objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components

There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lower bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades, which can be placed in gathering tools, will add their names to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for instance adding a Glyph to an item that is a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would change it to a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with another the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, with the exception of inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
Path of Exile's upgrade process is different from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a specific number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost for upgrades is increased with each level however the materials required aren't as high. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the impact of these items, instead of dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

For example, an uncommon or unique weapon with a standard base will have only two affixes, while a legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade requires a certain number of Flightstones or Crests, based on the type of item at its current level and in what slot it is located in. Weapons will typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.
If an item does not attain its maximum level, the NPC grants the player the option to transfer it to a new character and then re-infuse it with a new set or upgrades. The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of materials however it will result in a lower chance of success.
Engineers may use a level in order to compare the height of the building to an established point, like a benchmark. This method is known as a "level loop." It involves taking readings with the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method makes sure that buildings are built to a high level of accuracy and safety.
Rerolling
Rerolling refers to the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is an important aspect of the game and can significantly enhance an item's strength and damage as well as other characteristics. It is possible to do this through the menu for items, or by pressing the Reroll button every time you upgrade an item. Rerolling is costly and should only be used in very rare instances.

To determine if an item is worth upgrading, players must click the Upgrade button on the screen of their character. It will show the item's characteristics, as well as the required items to upgrade it. To upgrade the No-mouth Face for instance, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, as well as 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards.
